If you are looking for Bonsmara cattle for sale in South Africa, you are looking at a breed that was made for this country. DRM Livestock supplies Bonsmara calves, young cattle, yearling heifers, pregnant cows and breeding bulls, with delivery arranged to your farm anywhere in South Africa. Tell us what you need and we will send you a written quote with current prices and transport.

Why Farmers Choose Bonsmara Cattle

The Bonsmara was developed by Professor Jan Bonsma at the Mara Research Station in Limpopo, mainly from Afrikaner cattle crossed with Hereford and Shorthorn. The goal was simple: combine the heat and tick tolerance of the Afrikaner with the growth and carcass of the British breeds, and select hard for fertility. From the start, the breed was built on measured performance rather than looks, and that is still its biggest strength.

  • Fertility: Bonsmara cows are known for calving regularly and early, which is the number that decides whether a cow-calf herd makes money.
  • Adaptation: a short, smooth red coat and good heat tolerance help them keep grazing and keep condition in hot weather.
  • Growth and carcass: weaners grow well and are popular with feedlots, which usually shows in the weaner price.
  • Mothering: good milk and good mothering ability mean heavier calves at weaning.
  • Temperament: generally calm, easy cattle to handle.

It is no surprise that the Bonsmara is one of the most widely farmed beef breeds in South Africa.

Where Bonsmara Cattle Do Best

Bonsmaras are at home across most of the country: the bushveld and mixed veld of Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga, the sweetveld of the Northern Cape and Free State, and the grassland of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. They do not need special treatment, but like any breed they perform to the level of the management. Stock within your grazing capacity, give a phosphorus lick in summer and a protein lick in winter, and run a controlled breeding season, and Bonsmara cows will reward you.

Many farmers also use Bonsmara bulls on Nguni or crossbred cows to add growth and weight to their weaners without giving up much adaptability.

Choosing the Right Bonsmara Animals

Not all Bonsmara cattle for sale suit every farm. Match the animal to the job you need it to do.

Bonsmara calves and young cattle

Calves and young cattle are the cheapest way into the breed and let you grow animals out on your own veld. Look for calves that are well grown for their age, bright and active, with no signs of scours or pneumonia. Plan their feeding before they arrive: young cattle need good grazing or supplementation to keep growing.

Bonsmara heifers

Heifers are the future of your herd, so buy them carefully. Choose heifers that are well grown for their age, with sound feet and legs, good depth of body and a feminine head. Mate them only once they reach about two-thirds of their expected mature weight, so they calve without trouble and come back into calf the next season.

Pregnant Bonsmara cows

Pregnant cows give you calves within months, not years. Ask how far along the cows are, and have them checked if you are unsure. Heavily pregnant cows need gentle handling and careful transport, so plan delivery around the calving date.

Bonsmara bulls

A bull sires most of your calves every year, so he is the quickest way to improve a herd. Look for a bull that is sound on his feet and legs, has good length and depth, a well-developed scrotum and a masculine head. Where available, ask about his performance records and his mother’s fertility, because the Bonsmara is a performance breed and those numbers matter. Have him tested for breeding soundness before your breeding season.

What to Check Before You Buy

Before you commit to any Bonsmara cattle for sale, from us or anyone else, check:

  • Feet and legs: watch the animal walk. A cow on veld walks every day, and a bull has to cover cows for a whole season.
  • Condition: ribs not showing, but not over-fat. Fat bulls and heifers often have fertility problems.
  • Udder and teats on cows and heifers: four functional teats, no lumps, no pendulous udders.
  • Testicles on bulls: firm, even and well developed. Ask for a breeding soundness examination by a vet.
  • Temperament: calm cattle are easier and safer to work, and temperament is partly inherited.
  • Paperwork: a registered brand, a document of identification, vaccination history and, where required, a veterinary movement permit.

Delivery and Paperwork

Our Bonsmara cattle for sale are delivered to farms across South Africa, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Transport is quoted separately, because it depends on the number of animals, the distance and the route.

Because of the current foot-and-mouth disease controls, cattle may only move with the correct documents and, in affected areas, an official veterinary movement permit. We handle the identification documents with every sale and work with the state vet on movement requirements, so your cattle arrive legally and traceably. On arrival, keep new animals apart from your herd for at least 28 days and give them time to settle before you work them.
