Why Farmers Choose Brahman Cattle

The Brahman is a Bos indicus breed, developed in the United States from Indian zebu cattle and brought to South Africa in the 1950s. Everything about it is designed to handle heat:

  • Heat tolerance: Brahmans have more sweat glands, loose skin with a large surface area and a short, shiny coat that reflects sunlight, so they keep grazing when other cattle are standing in the shade.
  • Tick and insect resistance: the thick, mobile skin makes life hard for ticks and flies.
  • Hardiness and longevity: Brahman cows are known for long, productive lives on tough veld.
  • Mothering: strong maternal instinct and good milk.
  • Crossbreeding value: crossed with Bos taurus breeds, the Brahman gives a big boost in hybrid vigour, which shows up as better fertility, growth and survival in the calves.

For breed standards and registered breeders, visit the Brahman Cattle Breeders’ Society of South Africa.

Where Brahman Cattle Do Best

Brahmans are at their best in the hot, humid and tick-heavy parts of the country: the Lowveld, the bushveld of Limpopo and North West, northern KwaZulu-Natal and the hotter parts of Mpumalanga. They also do well in dry, hot areas where heat stress holds other breeds back.

Many commercial farmers use Brahman bulls on Bonsmara, Simmentaler or other cows, or Brahman-cross cows as their breeding herd, to combine the Brahman’s hardiness with the growth of the other breed.

Choosing the Right Brahman Animals

Not all Brahman cattle for sale suit every farm. Match the animal to the job you need it to do.

Brahman calves and young cattle

Calves and young cattle let you build a Brahman herd gradually. Look for well-grown, active animals, and handle them calmly from the start. Brahmans are intelligent and respond well to quiet, consistent handling, and cattle handled well when young are much easier to work later.

Brahman heifers

Brahman heifers tend to mature a little later than British breeds, so give them time and good nutrition to reach breeding size before they are mated. Choose heifers with sound feet and legs, good depth of body and a calm temperament.

Pregnant Brahman cows

Pregnant cows give you calves quickly. Brahman cows are protective mothers, so give them space at calving and handle them quietly.

Brahman bulls

Look for a bull with sound feet and legs, good length and muscling, a well-developed scrotum and a calm temperament. If you plan to use him on other breeds for crossbreeding, choose a bull whose size suits your cows. Have every bull tested for breeding soundness before the season.

What to Check Before You Buy

Before you commit to any Brahman cattle for sale, from us or anyone else, check:

  • Feet and legs: watch the animal walk. A cow on veld walks every day, and a bull has to cover cows for a whole season.
  • Condition: ribs not showing, but not over-fat. Fat bulls and heifers often have fertility problems.
  • Udder and teats on cows and heifers: four functional teats, no lumps, no pendulous udders.
  • Testicles on bulls: firm, even and well developed. Ask for a breeding soundness examination by a vet.
  • Temperament: calm cattle are easier and safer to work, and temperament is partly inherited.
  • Paperwork: a registered brand, a document of identification, vaccination history and, where required, a veterinary movement permit.

Delivery and Paperwork

Our Brahman cattle for sale are delivered to farms across South Africa, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Transport is quoted separately, because it depends on the number of animals, the distance and the route.

Because of the current foot-and-mouth disease controls, cattle may only move with the correct documents and, in affected areas, an official veterinary movement permit. We handle the identification documents with every sale and work with the state vet on movement requirements, so your cattle arrive legally and traceably. On arrival, keep new animals apart from your herd for at least 28 days and give them time to settle before you work them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Brahman cattle cost in South Africa?

It depends on the category, the number of animals and the market at the time. We send current prices, availability and transport costs with every written quote.

Are Brahman cattle aggressive?

Brahmans are intelligent and sensitive rather than aggressive. Handled calmly and consistently, they are easy to work with. Rough handling makes any breed harder to manage.

Are Brahman cattle good for hot areas?

Yes. Heat tolerance is the Brahman’s biggest strength, which is why it is so popular in hot, humid and tick-heavy parts of South Africa.

Why cross Brahman with other breeds?

Crossing Brahman with Bos taurus breeds gives strong hybrid vigour, which usually means better fertility, growth and survival in the offspring.

Do you deliver Brahman cattle to my farm?

Yes. We arrange delivery across South Africa. Transport is quoted separately, based on the number of cattle and the distance.

Do the cattle come with documents?

Yes. Every animal comes with a document of identification, and we work with the state vet on any movement permits required under the foot-and-mouth controls.
