Why Farmers Choose Angus Cattle

The Angus comes from Scotland and is one of the most widely farmed beef breeds in the world, in both black and red types.

  • Carcass quality: Angus beef is known for marbling and tenderness, and is sold under its own name by many butchers and brands.
  • Early maturity: Angus cattle finish at a younger age, which suits feedlots and grass-finishing systems.
  • Easy calving: moderate birth weights mean fewer calving problems, which is why Angus bulls are often used on heifers.
  • Naturally polled: no horns means no dehorning, and safer handling.
  • Good mothers: Angus cows are fertile, milk well and are generally calm.

Where Angus Cattle Do Best

Angus do best where the grazing is good: the grassland of the Free State and Mpumalanga highveld, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape, and farms with planted pastures. They are a British breed, so on very hot, dry and tick-heavy veld they usually need more help than the adapted breeds. Red Angus handles heat a little better than black, because the red coat absorbs less sun.

Angus bulls are also widely used on adapted cows such as Nguni or Bonsmara to add carcass quality and early maturity to the weaners, while the dam brings the hardiness.

Choosing the Right Angus Animals

Not all Angus cattle for sale suit every farm. Match the animal to the job you need it to do.

Angus calves and young cattle

Calves and young cattle are a good way to get into Angus, especially if you plan to grow them out for the feedlot or beef market. Plan their nutrition before they arrive: Angus reward good feed with fast growth, and hold back when feed is short.

Angus heifers

Angus heifers mature early and can reach breeding size sooner than many breeds when they are well fed. Look for sound feet and legs, good depth of body and a calm temperament.

Pregnant Angus cows

Pregnant cows are the fastest route to calves. Angus cows usually calve easily and mother well. Handle them gently and plan transport around their calving dates.

Angus bulls

Look for a bull that is sound on his feet and legs, well muscled, with a well-developed scrotum. Ask about birth weights in his family if you plan to use him on heifers. In hot areas, make sure he has shade and water, because heat stress can affect a bull’s fertility. Have every bull tested for breeding soundness before the season.

What to Check Before You Buy

Before you commit to any Angus cattle for sale, from us or anyone else, check:

  • Feet and legs: watch the animal walk. A cow on veld walks every day, and a bull has to cover cows for a whole season.
  • Condition: ribs not showing, but not over-fat. Fat bulls and heifers often have fertility problems.
  • Udder and teats on cows and heifers: four functional teats, no lumps, no pendulous udders.
  • Testicles on bulls: firm, even and well developed. Ask for a breeding soundness examination by a vet.
  • Temperament: calm cattle are easier and safer to work, and temperament is partly inherited.
  • Paperwork: a registered brand, a document of identification, vaccination history and, where required, a veterinary movement permit.

Delivery and Paperwork

Our Angus cattle for sale are delivered to farms across South Africa, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Transport is quoted separately, because it depends on the number of animals, the distance and the route.

Because of the current foot-and-mouth disease controls, cattle may only move with the correct documents and, in affected areas, an official veterinary movement permit. We handle the identification documents with every sale and work with the state vet on movement requirements, so your cattle arrive legally and traceably. On arrival, keep new animals apart from your herd for at least 28 days and give them time to settle before you work them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Angus cattle cost in South Africa?

It depends on the category, the number of animals and the market at the time. We send current prices, availability and transport costs with every written quote.

Do Angus cattle do well in South Africa?

Yes, in the right areas. They do best on good grassland and pastures in cooler regions. On very hot, dry, tick-heavy veld, adapted breeds usually perform better.

What is the difference between black and red Angus?

Mainly colour. Both are the same breed type. Red Angus handles heat slightly better because its coat absorbs less sunlight.

Are Angus bulls good for heifers?

Yes. Angus bulls are known for calving ease, which makes them a popular choice for first-calf heifers.

Do you deliver Angus cattle to my farm?

Yes. We arrange delivery across South Africa. Transport is quoted separately, based on the number of cattle and the distance.

Do the cattle come with documents?

Yes. Every animal comes with a document of identification, and we work with the state vet on any movement permits required under the foot-and-mouth controls.
