Description
Landrace pigs for sale are the other half of the classic commercial sow. The Landrace is a long, lean, white pig with big litters and a quiet nature, and crossed with the Large White it produces the sow that most commercial piggeries are built on.
DRM Livestock supplies Landrace piglets, growing pigs, young breeding gilts, pregnant sows and breeding boars, with delivery arranged to your farm anywhere in South Africa. Tell us what you need and we will send you a written quote with current prices and transport.

Why Farmers Choose Landrace Pigs
The Landrace was developed in Denmark and is farmed around the world as a mother breed. It is white, with a long body and ears that fall forward over the eyes.
- Large litters: Landrace sows are known for prolific litters and good mothering.
- Long, lean carcass: the long body produces a lean carcass that suits the bacon and pork trade.
- Temperament: generally docile and easy to handle, which helps in the farrowing house.
- Milk: good milk production for heavier piglets at weaning.
- Crossbreeding: the Landrace x Large White F1 sow combines the strengths of both breeds with hybrid vigour.
For industry news, biosecurity guidance and training for pig farmers, see the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO).
Where Landrace Pigs Do Best
Landrace pigs do best in well-managed, housed units with good floors, feed and ventilation. As a white breed, they need shade and cooling in hot weather. They are an excellent choice for farmers building a commercial sow herd. Read more in our guide to pig farming in South Africa.
Choosing the Right Landrace Pigs
Not all Landrace pigs for sale suit every farm. Match the animal to the job you need it to do.
Landrace piglets and growing pigs
Piglets and growers let you start small or grow out pigs for slaughter. Look for active, evenly sized pigs with clean skin and no coughing or scours.
Landrace gilts
Choose gilts with strong legs and feet, a long body and at least 12 to 14 good, evenly spaced teats. Leg strength matters in a long-bodied breed, so watch them walk on a hard floor.
Pregnant Landrace sows
Pregnant sows give you litters within weeks. Move them gently and have a clean farrowing pen ready before they arrive.
Landrace boars
Choose a boar with strong legs, good length, two even testicles and a calm temperament, from a herd with a known health status.
What to Check Before You Buy
Before you commit to any Landrace pigs for sale, from us or anyone else, check:
- Legs and feet: watch the pig walk on a hard floor. Lameness and weak legs shorten a breeding pig’s working life.
- Teats on gilts and sows: at least 12 to 14 evenly spaced, functional teats, with no blind or inverted ones.
- Testicles and sheath on boars: two, even and well developed, with a healthy sheath.
- Breathing and skin: no coughing, laboured breathing, scabs or signs of mange.
- Condition and growth: well grown for their age, neither thin nor over-fat.
- Herd health: ask about the source herd’s vaccination programme and disease history.
- Paperwork: a registered identification mark, usually a tattoo, a document of identification and, where required, a veterinary movement permit.
Delivery and Paperwork
Our Landrace pigs for sale are delivered to farms across South Africa, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Transport is quoted separately, because it depends on the number of animals, the distance and the route.
Because of African swine fever and the current foot-and-mouth disease controls, pigs may only move with the correct documents and, in affected areas, an official veterinary movement permit. We handle the identification documents with every sale and work with the state vet on movement requirements. Unload new pigs at your boundary, never let them mix with other pigs on the way, and never feed swill. On arrival, keep new animals apart from your herd for at least 28 days, as current foot-and-mouth disease guidance requires, and give them time to settle before you work them.
