Why Farmers Choose Savanna Goats
The Savanna was developed in South Africa from indigenous white goats, selected over decades under tough, extensive conditions with little help from the farmer. What survived and bred well was kept. The result is a meat goat built for hard veld.
- Hardiness: Savannas are known for coping with heat, drought and poor veld better than most meat breeds.
- Sun protection: a short white coat reflects heat, while the dark, pigmented skin protects against sunburn.
- Disease tolerance: their indigenous background gives good resistance to many local diseases.
- Fertility and mothering: does are fertile, milk well and raise their kids with little help.
- Meat: a well-muscled, deep body that produces a good carcass.
Registered goats of this breed are recorded with SA Stud Book, which is also a good place to find breed standards and registered breeders.
Where Savanna Goats Do Best
Savannas do best on hot, dry, extensive farms and bushveld: the Northern Cape, North West, Limpopo, the Karoo and the drier parts of the Eastern Cape and Free State. They suit farmers who want a goat that needs little intervention.
Savanna bucks are also used on indigenous and crossbred does to add size and meat while keeping hardiness.
Choosing the Right Savanna Goats
Not all Savanna goats for sale suit every farm. Match the animal to the job you need it to do.
Savanna kids and older kids
Look for active, well-grown kids with a clean white coat, dark skin and bright eyes, and no signs of scours or pneumonia. Older kids can be grown out for the Easter or December market.
Yearling Savanna does
Choose does with a deep, long body, sound feet and legs, a correct mouth and a good udder. Look for dark pigment on the skin, around the eyes and under the tail, which is part of the breed’s sun protection.
Pregnant Savanna does
Pregnant does give you kids within a few months. Savanna does usually kid easily, but plan transport around their kidding dates.
Savanna bucks
Look for a buck with a broad, deep, well-muscled body, strong legs, good pigment and two firm, even testicles, in fit working condition before mating.
What to Check Before You Buy
Before you commit to any Savanna goats for sale, from us or anyone else, check:
- Mouth: teeth should meet the pad squarely. Check the age against the teeth.
- Feet and legs: watch the goat walk. Goats on veld cover a lot of ground every day.
- Condition: feel over the back and ribs. A good coat can hide a thin goat.
- Eyelids: pale inner eyelids can mean a heavy wireworm burden.
- Lumps: hard swellings near the jaw, neck or shoulder can be caseous lymphadenitis, a contagious abscess disease. Avoid those animals.
- Udder on does: two functional teats and a soft udder. Testicles on bucks: two, firm and even.
- Paperwork: the seller’s registered mark, a document of identification, vaccination history and, where required, a veterinary movement permit.
Delivery and Paperwork
Our Savanna goats for sale are delivered to farms across South Africa, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Transport is quoted separately, because it depends on the number of animals, the distance and the route.
Goats are cloven-hoofed, so they fall under the current foot-and-mouth disease movement controls. They may only move with the correct documents and, in affected areas, an official veterinary movement permit. We handle the identification documents with every sale and work with the state vet on movement requirements. If you farm in a bont tick area, ask your vet about heartwater protection before goats from tick-free areas arrive. On arrival, keep new animals apart from your herd for at least 28 days and give them time to settle before you work them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do Savanna goats cost in South Africa?
It depends on the category, the number of goats and the market at the time. We send current prices, availability and transport costs with every written quote.
What is the difference between Savanna and Boer goats?
Both are meat goats. The Boer goat has a white body and brown head and usually grows a little faster, while the Savanna is all white with dark skin and is known for extra hardiness on harsh veld.
Why do Savanna goats have dark skin?
The dark, pigmented skin protects them from sunburn and strong sun, while the white coat reflects heat.
Are Savanna goats good for beginners?
Yes. They are hardy and need little intervention, which makes them forgiving. They still need a basic health programme and shelter from cold rain.
Do you deliver Savanna goats to my farm?
Yes. We arrange delivery across South Africa. Transport is quoted separately, based on the number of goats and the distance.
Do the goats come with documents?
Yes. Every animal comes with a document of identification, and we work with the state vet on any movement permits required under the foot-and-mouth controls.
