Why Farmers Choose Merino Sheep

The Merino has been farmed in South Africa for more than two centuries, and South African breeders have selected it for fine wool, a good carcass and adaptation to local veld.

  • Fine wool: Merino wool is the finest and most valuable sheep wool, with strong demand from international buyers.
  • Two incomes: wool every year plus lambs for slaughter or breeding.
  • Adaptation: Merinos walk well and do well on Karoo and grassland veld.
  • Flocking behaviour: Merinos stay together well, which makes herding and handling easier.

A wool sheep does need more work than a hair sheep: shearing, crutching and a plan to prevent fly strike.

Where Merino Sheep Do Best

Merinos do best in the Karoo, the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, the Free State and the grassland of Mpumalanga, where the climate suits wool production. Very hot, humid areas with heavy fly pressure make wool sheep harder to manage.

Choosing the Right Merino Sheep

Not all Merino sheep for sale suit every farm. Match the animal to the job you need it to do.

Merino lambs and older lambs

Lambs let you build a flock gradually. Look for active, well-grown lambs with a good, even fleece.

Yearling Merino ewes

Choose ewes with a sound body, feet and mouth, a good udder and a fleece that is dense, even and free of dark fibres. Ask about the wool quality and lambing record of the flock they come from.

Pregnant Merino ewes

Pregnant ewes give you lambs quickly. Plan shearing and crutching around lambing, and feed well in late pregnancy.

Merino rams

A ram affects both the wool and the lambs of your flock. Look for a sound, well-grown ram with two firm testicles and good wool, and ask about his performance or wool test records where available.

What to Check Before You Buy

Before you commit to any Merino sheep for sale, from us or anyone else, check:

  • Mouth: teeth should meet the pad squarely. Undershot or overshot jaws are a fault, and worn or missing teeth shorten a ewe’s working life.
  • Feet: watch the sheep walk, and check for overgrown hooves and signs of footrot.
  • Condition: feel over the backbone and ribs. Wool and hair can hide a thin sheep.
  • Eyelids: pale inner eyelids can mean a heavy wireworm burden.
  • Udder on ewes: two functional teats and no hard lumps from old mastitis.
  • Testicles on rams: two, firm and even, with no lumps. Ask for a breeding soundness examination by a vet.
  • Paperwork: the seller’s registered mark, a document of identification, vaccination history and, where required, a veterinary movement permit.

Delivery and Paperwork

Our Merino sheep for sale are delivered to farms across South Africa, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Transport is quoted separately, because it depends on the number of animals, the distance and the route.

Sheep are cloven-hoofed, so they fall under the current foot-and-mouth disease movement controls. They may only move with the correct documents and, in affected areas, an official veterinary movement permit. We handle the identification documents with every sale and work with the state vet on movement requirements. Check new sheep for lice and sheep scab, and treat them if needed before they join your flock. On arrival, keep new animals apart from your flock for at least 28 days and give them time to settle before you work them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Merino sheep cost in South Africa?

It depends on the category, the number of sheep and the market at the time. We send current prices, availability and transport costs with every written quote.

How often are Merino sheep shorn?

Usually once a year, although some farmers shear more often. They also need crutching around the tail to reduce fly strike.

Are Merino sheep good for meat as well?

Yes. South African Merinos produce saleable lambs as well as wool, which is why they are farmed for two incomes.

Merino or Dohne Merino: which is better?

The Merino focuses more on fine wool, while the Dohne Merino puts more emphasis on meat and fertility with good wool. The right choice depends on your veld and market.

Do you deliver Merino sheep to my farm?

Yes. We arrange delivery across South Africa. Transport is quoted separately, based on the number of sheep and the distance.

Do the sheep come with documents?

Yes. Every animal comes with a document of identification, and we work with the state vet on any movement permits required under the foot-and-mouth controls.
