Description
Saanen goats for sale are the starting point for most goat dairies. The Saanen is the highest-producing dairy goat breed, a calm, white goat that turns good feed into a lot of milk for drinking, cheese, yoghurt or soap.
DRM Livestock supplies Saanen kids, older kids, yearling does, pregnant does and breeding bucks, with delivery arranged to your farm anywhere in South Africa. Tell us what you need and we will send you a written quote with current prices and transport.

Why Farmers Choose Saanen Goats
The Saanen comes from the Saanen valley in Switzerland and is kept in dairies all over the world.
- Milk yield: the Saanen is known as the highest-yielding dairy goat breed, with a long lactation.
- Temperament: calm and gentle, which makes daily milking easier.
- Consistency: a uniform, predictable breed that suits a structured dairy.
- Crossbreeding: Saanen bucks are used to lift milk yield in other goats.
A dairy goat is not a veld goat. To milk well, a Saanen needs good feed every day, clean water, a dry shelter and a hygienic milking routine.
Registered goats of this breed are recorded with SA Stud Book, which is also a good place to find breed standards and registered breeders.
Where Saanen Goats Do Best
Saanens do best in intensive or semi-intensive systems with good feed: planted pastures, lucerne and a dairy ration, close to buyers for milk or cheese. Their pale skin burns easily, so give them shade in hot areas. They are not suited to extensive, harsh veld.
Choosing the Right Saanen Goats
Not all Saanen goats for sale suit every farm. Match the animal to the job you need it to do.
Saanen kids and older kids
Kids are the most affordable way to build a dairy herd, but remember they will only milk after their first kidding. Look for healthy, active kids from does with a good milk record.
Yearling Saanen does
Choose does with a wide, deep body, strong feet and legs and a well-attached udder with two well-placed teats. Ask about their mothers’ milk production.
Pregnant Saanen does
Pregnant does are the quickest route to milk, because they start milking after they kid. Plan feeding and milking facilities before they arrive.
Saanen bucks
Choose a buck from a high-producing dam, with strong legs and two firm, even testicles. His daughters’ milk yield is his real value.
What to Check Before You Buy
Before you commit to any Saanen goats for sale, from us or anyone else, check:
- Mouth: teeth should meet the pad squarely. Check the age against the teeth.
- Feet and legs: watch the goat walk. Goats on veld cover a lot of ground every day.
- Condition: feel over the back and ribs. A good coat can hide a thin goat.
- Eyelids: pale inner eyelids can mean a heavy wireworm burden.
- Lumps: hard swellings near the jaw, neck or shoulder can be caseous lymphadenitis, a contagious abscess disease. Avoid those animals.
- Udder on does: two functional teats and a soft udder. Testicles on bucks: two, firm and even.
- Paperwork: the seller’s registered mark, a document of identification, vaccination history and, where required, a veterinary movement permit.
Delivery and Paperwork
Our Saanen goats for sale are delivered to farms across South Africa, including the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Transport is quoted separately, because it depends on the number of animals, the distance and the route.
Goats are cloven-hoofed, so they fall under the current foot-and-mouth disease movement controls. They may only move with the correct documents and, in affected areas, an official veterinary movement permit. We handle the identification documents with every sale and work with the state vet on movement requirements. If you farm in a bont tick area, ask your vet about heartwater protection before goats from tick-free areas arrive. On arrival, keep new animals apart from your herd for at least 28 days and give them time to settle before you work them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do Saanen goats cost in South Africa?
It depends on the category, the number of goats and the market at the time. We send current prices, availability and transport costs with every written quote.
How much milk does a Saanen goat produce?
Saanens are the highest-yielding dairy goat breed, but actual yield depends heavily on feed, management, stage of lactation and the individual doe.
Can Saanen goats live on veld?
Not well if you want milk. They need good feed, shelter and shade to produce, and suit intensive systems better than extensive veld.
Can I use a Saanen buck on meat goats?
Yes, if you want to add milk to your does. For meat production, a meat breed buck is usually the better choice.
Do you deliver Saanen goats to my farm?
Yes. We arrange delivery across South Africa. Transport is quoted separately, based on the number of goats and the distance.
Do the goats come with documents?
Yes. Every animal comes with a document of identification, and we work with the state vet on any movement permits required under the foot-and-mouth controls.
